Notable History About Houston

According to the U.S. Census Bureau findings in 2023, Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. The city was founded in 1836, nine years before Texas became the 28th state. The city of Houston’s namesake is Sam Houston. Sam Houston was originally from Virginia and became a prominent figure in Texas history as a lawyer, soldier and politician. His fame soared when he led Texas to victory against Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. Following this triumph, he won election as the first president of the Republic of Texas, serving two non-consecutive terms (1836-38, 1841-44). He also represented Texas in the U.S. Senate after its annexation in 1845. During his presidency, the city of Houston was established and briefly served as the Texan capital.

In 1932, the first Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was held. In 1943, Texas Medical Center was founded in Houston. In 1969, “Houston” is the first word heard on earth from the surface of the moon. In 1971, after Shell Oil Company moved their headquarters to Houston, over 200 major corporations did the same. Houston is a major metropolitan city that continues growing and offering world class opportunities to all who visit and, most importantly, to all who call this city home.
